Talk to General Physician on Urine Infection
Asking for Mother, Female, 64 years old, Karachi
My mum is diabetic and has bp problem. She recently started feeling pain and irritation in urinating. She first did urine DR and the reports showed infection. Hence she started on Cranmax (cranberry extract powder) (twice a day) and on Ciproxin 500 mg (twice a day). After just one dose of Ciproxin, she had her urine culture test. Now she has taken Ciproxin for 5 days. Culture was done on day 1. Should we continue on Ciproxin for a total of 7 days? Please suggest after seeing both Urine DR and Urine Culture reports what should be the way forward and what to do next?

Yes continue ciproxin for 7 days...
AOA! Dear your mother has taken the wrong antibiotic.As culture report is showing bacteria causing infection is resistant to ciprofloxacin. So she should stop taking this antibiotic now and she has to start new course with the one which would be effective for her. From the culture result suggested antibiotics I would advise her to start Nitrofurantoin 100 mg twice daily for 7 days . Thanks

Salam. Thank you so much for your prompt response. Please let me know once she stops taking ciproxin, when can she start taking Nitrofurantoin? One day gap or more?

Your mother is suffering from multi drug resistant E. coli urine infection which is very common these days due to overuse and self use of antibiotics by the patients on their own. Her culture report showing fortunately her bacteria can be killed by 2 of the common antibiotics, Nitrofurantoin and Augmentin. You can choose anyone of these. But I suggest Nitrofurantoin. Thanks
no doubt all is written in reports but BETTER TO TAKE AN appoint or online appoint....Allah kareem
She should stop ciprofloxacin even if the course is not complete and start Nitrofurantoin right away , no gap is required. Better complete 7 days . Take 1 tablet every 12 hours( twice daily). Thanks
